How to stay safe on the job

It seems that too many Colorado workers suffer on-the-job injuries that require workers’ compensation claims. It’s important to take certain steps to stay safe.

Report unsafe conditions

Workers who notice any conditions that are unsafe can tackle the hazards if they are able to do so. If anything is too dangerous to address, make sure to immediately report unsafe conditions to your supervisor or manager.

Always stay aware of your surroundings

Most workplaces have some level of danger. For instance, there are many types of heavy machinery in factories and warehouses. Staying aware of your surroundings at all times can keep you safer. Watch where you step to avoid a slip and fall and be careful when working with or near equipment.

Avoid amassing clutter

Clutter in the workplace is common, but it can also lead to employees suffering accidents that require them to file for workers’ compensation benefits. Avoid placing items on the floor where others could trip over them. Keep storage areas and closets free of clutter by keeping them neat and organized.

Take regular breaks

By law, employees are entitled to occasional breaks. Whether you work while sitting in front of a computer all day or if you do manual labor in a warehouse, you need to take breaks to refresh. It can help you to feel better and increase your focus when you get back to work.

Use good posture

Your posture is important on the job. Many workers suffer from repetitive motion or strain injuries due to poor posture in different positions. Whether you sit while working or have to reach up for heavy items, it’s important to keep good posture.

Wear protective equipment when necessary

Some jobs or tasks require protective gear to be worn. For example, if you work on a construction site, you should have a hard hat, work boots and protective vests. If you’re a nurse, you might need personal protective equipment or PPE that includes facemasks, gloves and protective goggles while working with sick patients.
