Hit and run Accidents Pose A Growing Threat to Denver Drivers

Hit-and-run accidents in Denver statistics 2025

Hit-and-run accidents are a serious issue in Denver, with incidents occurring at more than twice the national rate. Fatalities from these crashes may also be increasing.

Across the U.S., hit-and-run accidents have been on the rise, despite a decrease in overall traffic deaths. Furthermore, Denver is no exception. A 9 News investigation shows hit-and-run accidents happen more often here than anywhere else in the country, and the death toll from these crashes is climbing.

A Dangerous Trend

Hit-and-Run Crashes in Colorado: A Growing Problem

A look at hit-and-run crashes in Colorado shows some troubling trends. In 2014, 22 people died in these crashes, a 20% jump from the year before. But the problem runs even deeper:

  • From 2011 to 2014, Denver averaged 17 hit-and-run crashes every day.
  • Between 2011 and 2013, nearly 28% of all crashes in Denver involved a driver running away, much higher than the national average of 10%.
  • In 2013, more than one person was injured every day in these type of crashes in Denver, Lakewood, and Aurora.

Alcohol is often involved, and pedestrians are at the greatest risk. More than half of the people killed in these crashes were pedestrians, and in 2014, about two-thirds of this type of accident in Colorado were linked to alcohol.

Tackling the Issue

To fight this epidemic, state lawmakers have introduced several measures. They extended the statute of limitations for these crashes to 10 years, making it easier to hold drivers accountable. Authorities also adopted an alert system similar to Amber Alerts called the Medina Alert to help track down criminals, leading to a significant increase in arrests — from 20% to 76% in Denver.

However, many drivers still remain at large. Even when authorities catch them, victims often suffer because they didn’t receive timely medical care after the crash.

Victim Options

Victims of hit and run accidents may have legal options. If the driver is found, victims can seek compensation through their insurance. If not, they may be able to make a claim through their own insurance policies. Anyone affected should consult with a personal injury attorney to explore their options.
