Summer driving safety important for teens

Keeping teens safe over the summer can be a challenge. School is out and many teens want to borrow the car and head out to have all kinds of adventures with their friends. There’s nothing wrong with that, as long as they can do it responsibly.

Because there are more teen driving deaths between Memorial Day and Labor Day than any other time throughout the year, it’s especially important for parents to be extra vigilant with their teen drivers during that time. Proving plenty of training and modeling good behavior are two of the ways parents can help.

What Else Can a Parent Do?

Being a good role model and making sure teens have a lot of practice behind the wheel are important, but they aren’t the only things a parent can do to help their children be safe. They can also help reduce distractions.

For example, one of the main causes of accidents based on distracted driving is having too many people in the car. Teens like to travel around with their friend, but it’s not always a case of the more the merrier. As a parent, you may want to limit the number of friends your teen can have in the car at any one time. The radio and texting are also distractions, so instill good behavior in those areas to help your teen be safe.

Additionally, parents can teach their children how to inspect their vehicle. The tire pressure, oil level, washer fluid, and other systems can all be inspected, and the more a teen driver knows about the vehicle the better. Driving is a privilege, and by helping a teen driver understand that a parent can go a long way toward protecting that teen from reckless or potentially unsafe behavior behind the wheel now and in the future.

What Happens If Someone Gets Hurt?

No matter how diligent a person is as a parent or behind the wheel, there’s always a chance that they could get injured in a collision. If you or your teen driver has been hurt in a crash, you’ll want to make sure your medical needs are taken care of. Then it’s time to address the issue of compensation.

With the right attorney on your side, you have the chance to be financially compensated for the injuries you’ve sustained. Being made whole can be important, because medical bills can add up to a lot over time. Don’t wait to talk to an attorney. The time to do that is as soon after your accident as possible.
